John was always the class clown, making everyone laugh. He was popular, always wearing a big smile and cracking jokes. But beneath his cheerful exterior, John was dealing with the loss of his father. He didn’t want anyone to know his pain, so he hid it behind humor.

One day, during a group project, Mrs. Thomas, his English teacher, pulled him aside. “John, you’re always so upbeat, but I sense something’s bothering you. Want to talk?”

John’s smile faded. He looked down, struggling to keep up his facade. “I miss my dad,” he finally admitted, his voice trembling. “It’s so hard pretending to be happy.”

“You don’t have to pretend. We’re here for you,” Mrs. Thomas said, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.

With regular STMs, John’s silent struggle could have been recognized earlier. A caring conversation might have helped him cope with his grief and find healthier ways to deal with his emotions.
